Warmth, health, comfort and emotional support - these are a baby's primary needs. In fact, these can be categorised as the basic or elemental needs of any baby.

A blanket provides all these and more. It ensures that the baby is protected against fluctuating weather conditions by regulating temperatures so that the baby experiences appropriate warmth. A blanket also ensures the right degree of comfort so that the baby is well taken care of and further, has the flexibility to play too. Importantly, a baby blanket is a good emotional support, over and above what parents provide by default, as it makes the baby feel safe with it being wrapped around it.

Interestingly, though choosing a baby blanket may appear simple, it is not what parents and well wishers always agree on. Several times, zeroing on a blanket can be very challenging considering the tremendous choices available in the market. However, some key considerations may help smoothen the way in going for the right blanket.

Before you rush to purchase a blanket, pause and think for a moment whether you want to go for a hand knit blanket or one that comes ready made from the shops. The latter saves you a lot of time. However, the former can be personalized through hand knitting and monogramming. Alternatively, you can also buy a plain blanket and then introduce some cheerful stitches, designs and monogramming onto it. A blanket in either case also makes a perfect gift.

A blanket is available in several types. In fact, there are umpteen types of fancy blankets out there yonder. You can choose the themes that will appeal and be a good fit for a baby and will also suit the nursery. A blanket is also available in several colours that cheer up anyone including babies. Choosing softer ones may be more appropriate for a baby nursery. A blanket can also be purchased on a gender specific or gender neutral basis.

Further, due thought needs to be given to the material used in a blanket. Though a blanket comes in different types of materials, cotton may be more appropriate. It is soft and easily washable. It is also longer lasting and more durable. Importantly, it allows the proper level of comfort to a baby. Have due regard to the usage of organic materials as well in a blanket. Avoiding chemicals in a baby blanket is a good idea and also safer for the health of a baby. An organic baby blanket ensures that babies do not experience any allergies, rashes, multiple chemical sensitivities [MCS], Sudden Death Syndrome [SIDs] and microbial infestation. Cotton is an organic material and serves as a safer alternative for a baby blanket. Importantly, look for certifications from appointed or statutory bodies that certify a baby blanket as an organic blanket.
